I’ve seen it twice now and all my opinions have been reinforced after watching it tonight and it’s still fresh I figured I’d go over my thoughts on it. Plus how could I pass on a chance to use this awesome gif?
Spoilers after the jump.
I’m going to jump right into it and say my biggest pet peeve is the ending.
The problem for me is the ending was perfectly ready to go with everyone getting back to the base and Leia looking at Rey and them both mourning Han and they hug in a medium shot and continue to hug in a wide shot and roll credits. Watching again tonight I’d be shocked if I didn’t find out that was the original intended ending. The first time I saw it I was getting ready to get out of my seat and all this extra garbage with R2 waking up suddenly for no reason happened. The only satisfying part of this extended ending to me was that look of grief in both Rey and Luke’s eyes.
The next disappointment for me was the end of Rey and Kylo Ren’s lightsaber battle. I was fine with the battle for the most part but the planet just happening to open up perfectly down the middle between two people within five feet of each other is awfully convenient for the plot.
That does it for the negatives as there is little I really hold against the movie. Now on to the positive.
My favorite spectacle was the dogfight on Jakku. It was awesome to watch and so much better in 2D. Yep.
Kylo Ren is my favorite new character. He’s everything a sith lord should be. Whiney, rage filled, and uncontrolled emotion. He’s the best
Now for my favorite part of the entire story and the movie as a whole as well as something I don’t see a lot of people talking about.
Poe and Finn’s love. And I don’t mean romance. I mean that love you have for your brother, for your comrade. As much as people complain about how a romantic plot has to be pushed in every movie you don’t see people congratulating hollywood for non-romantic expressions of love. Granted I think Finn loves everyone/thing that’s not the first order.

I only saw it once, and am by no means a Star Wars buff (I did find the movie enjoyable though) but one thing I thought was odd was how Poe and Finn were like best friends at that reunited scene. They knew each other for like 5 minutes before the crash that separated them, for them to be hugging like old pals seemed a little strange.

They bonded over a traumatic situation and saving each other’s lives. Without either one they’d both be dead.

No doubt; they’re definitely friends. But still the gushing and hugging? Seemed a tad excessive (imo) given that they still hardly knew one another.

Well they both thought the other one was dead.

I mean, Fin and Rey also went through some heavy stuff and saved one another on Jakku but they weren't that close immediately afterwords.

The Poe/Finn bromance is super underrated. The thing about Kylo Ren is that you see a lot more depth to the character when compared to other sith. Some people don’t seem comfortable with that concept. He’s going through an emotional struggle on an issue that seems to be a little over his head, which would make most people seem a little whiney. I don’t love him, but I certainly don’t hate him like a lot of people seem to.

I agree for the most part.
I absolutely hate Poe’s character, whether it was the writing, terrible acting, or both...the character was horribly flat and served no real purpose.

Rey is kind of a distant person, though. She’s not used to being close to anyone. You can tell that Finn cares about her the same way he does about Poe, but he’s a bit put off by her standoffishness.

My only gripes are the Falcon bouncing all over the place and when Poe is telling Finn what to shoot after they escape the Star Destroyer. It felt like a video game tutorial.

I love that he’s whiney! I was playing one of the star wars games and made a sith character that I feel I should get royalties for now. He was completely spoiled and had this terrible view of how wronged he had been by everyone.
Why’d you turn to the dark side?
I wanted chocolate chip cookies and mother said all we had was oatmeal. They had to go.
Basically the inspiration was Joan Cusack’s character from Adams Family Values as a sith lord.
I always felt Vader and Palpatine were too restrained for people who were supposed to be embracing passion and rage.

He was mostly used as a plot device so I can understand that view.

I had lots of problems with the movie but the ending capped it. I thought the whole movie was just a set up to get you wanting the next one. Wonder how much you get paid to play Luke and have just a five second part? Like pizza, even when it’s not very good, I still like it.

Sorry, but your reply made me want to quote another movie.
Poe: I have to warn you, I’ve heard relationships based on intense experiences never work.
Finn: OK. We’ll have to base it on sex then.

Kylo Ren was a BAMF when he stopped that blaster mid-air during the opening of the film, and then proceeded to be a whiny bitch throughout the rest of the film.

Well I was psyched to see it until that shithead Bobbie Lee spoiled it on Doug Loves Movies (NOT a spoiler ep, mind you). Now I’ll just get to it when I get to it.

The whole movie is basically just a setup for the next one and I can be pretty forgiving of that for the most part, especially when you consider this is a studio franchise now and not an auteur’s vision. The thing that bothers me though is the ending is just so tacked on and you can tell it’s entirely to get people excited for the next one. I was already excited, I don’t need Disney to remind me Luke is out there somewhere.

He was always a whiny bitch, but he was an enjoyable to watch whiny bitch. Anakin can not make the same claim.

For SPECTRE, I managed to stay spoiler free for the 3 weeks I had to wait to see it. Work got in the way. Star Wars was going great until one damn podcast.

I had to wait three weeks for Star Wars for similar reasons and I dropped off the internet for the most part for a bit.

I knew where not to go, and Crooks & Liars, TPM, Gawker, and Oppo could be trusted to warn you if they were going to spoil it. Two of my favorite podcasts - Comedy Film Nerds and Steele Wars - labeled their spoiler episodes as such. But I didn’t expect the same from Doug Loves Movies. And some stupid fucking comedian spoke 7 words that ruined the fucker for me. I would reproduce them here, but someone might have the movie spoiled for them. And I won’t do that.

It should be ok here since I labeled the post for spoilers. If it makes you feel better I don’t think the movie is presented in a way where any of the would be spoilers are all that shocking as you can see most of them coming a mile away.

That’s pretty bad. Granted I don’t think you wouldn’t have seen it coming when watching the movie as the foreshadowing is pretty thick.

My expectation going in was that it was 50/50 that one of the returning 3 would die - obviously you could not kill them off during IV, V, VI, although VII was not even imaginable at the time. Eh - I’ll get over it, I was just looking forward to what would have been my only experience in a theater last year other than SPECTRE. It takes a lot to get us into a theater these days.

My favorite movie last year was Sicario and I’m very happy I saw it in theaters. That said my favorite theater experience was taking my wife and kids to see the HD re-release of The Iron Giant, it was the best.

Have yet to see Sicario - for me, SPECTRE is the best movie of 2015, although I’m a Bond enthusiast. If you want to hear two Bond nerds discussing all 26 movies with a guest, usually a comic, try this podcast . I highly recommend it.
And if you haven’t seen SPECTRE, the cold open with the helicopter is the best in any Bond movie. And, unlike many Bond films, the cold open relates to the main plot.
